The below is the majority of a press release issued by Bolton & Associates, following the earthquake that hit the east coast in mid-August, 2011. It was re-published by Southern Maryland News Net.

With the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit our area Aug. 23, a Charles County professional engineer who specializes in inspections says any damage caused by the moderate temblor might not be obvious.

“I would look for any obvious failures, like cracks or settling in the basement walls or foundation of a building,” said R. Gore Bolton, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bolton & Associates. “Unlike beauty, structural failure is more than skin deep.”

“In addition, checking for any broken utilities either within or connected to a building, like water, gas and electric, are also important to identify,” Bolton said. “Any trouble here is an obvious danger in the short term, but it also indicates a lot of movement that could result in future failures. It’s important to have any problem you might suspect in a building of yours be inspected by a qualified engineer.”

Areas to Check

Generally speaking …

Are all heavy objects below 5 feet; all shelves below 7 feet, 6 inches?

Are furniture and equipment that could tip and block an exit properly anchored?

Are stored materials stacked securely to prevent tipping, scattering, tripping?

In offices:

Are heavy workbenches anchored?

Are shelf units bolted to wall/floor/desk; not ceiling high; books not restrained?

Are computers and copying equipment held firmly in place?

In industrial environments:

Are wheels on large copy/blueprint machines properly blocked?

Are machine shop fixed equipment/electronic racks anchored?

Are air conditioners properly secured; cable trays braced at intervals of 10 feet or less?

“In southern Maryland, you really need a firm who knows the county staff and elected officials, and a firm who is well respected by those staff and officials. Bolton has that reputation. On a professional note, I have never needed any type of engineering discipline that Bolton did not have in-house or ready access to. So for me they are one-stop shopping at a very high competency level.”
